About CompanionRanked: the people behind the scores

CompanionRanked exists to answer one question with numbers instead of adjectives: across the AI girlfriend apps that matter in 2026, which one does the most for a given user? We publish a criteria-based leaderboard, a head-to-head table, and per-app reviews, all scored on the same rubric. Nothing on this site hides how it was measured.

Why this leaderboard exists

The category had a reviewing problem. Every "best AI girlfriend app" list read like a highlight reel: five-star everything, no losing columns, no rubric you could check. Marketing copy dressed up as measurement. We build companion software ourselves, so we knew how far apart the demos and the daily experience can be, and it bothered us that a shopper had no scoreboard to read before spending money.

So we built the scoreboard we wished existed. One rubric, ten dimensions, the same 0-to-10 scale applied to every app on the board, with the reasoning printed next to each number. Think of it less like a review column and more like a box score: you should be able to look at any cell and know exactly what was measured and why a given app won or lost it. When a rival tops a column, its number says so in plain sight. That is the whole point of keeping score in the open.

What we measure for

Our mission is narrow on purpose: turn a noisy category into a table you can trust enough to act on. We are not trying to be the internet's feelings about AI companions. We are trying to be the reference sheet a shopper pulls up before they pick, the one that tells them which app actually leads on the dimension they care about, whether that is images, memory, voice, calls or price. We rank Swipey AI first, we say so up front, and we back the number with a rubric anyone can audit.

What we cover

We track eleven AI companion apps across every dimension that changes the experience, and score each one hands-on. If you want the whole category in one place, this is it.

How we test and score

Every score is the result of a hands-on pass. We use each product the way a real user would, then rate it against a published rubric so the numbers mean the same thing across apps. The full weighting and reasoning is documented in the methodology section and explained further in our scoring explainer.

Every app on the leaderboard is scored on the same dimensions: chat quality, voice, image generation, video, calls, live mode, content freedom, memory, UI/UX and value. When a rival genuinely leads on one of them, we say so on the page.

Our reviewer

The scoring and writing on CompanionRanked come from a single editorial desk, not a rotating cast of anonymous freelancers. Reviews carry one consistent byline so you know who did the testing.

Who runs this site

CompanionRanked is written and maintained by the CompanionRanked editorial desk, operated by the team behind Swipey AI. There are no guest reviewers and no invented staff bios. When you read "we" here, it is the people who build Swipey and put together this comparison.

Why trust a leaderboard owned by a vendor?

Fair question, and the honest answer is: do not trust it on our word. Audit it. Everything needed for the audit is published:

• The criteria are public. You can check whether each score follows the rubric, including ours.
• Rivals win on the page. Character.AI's free catalog, Candy AI's image quality and Replika's companionship focus are stated as wins, in their reviews and in the comparison table.
• Every claim is checkable. Feature cells describe each product's public feature set, and the rival homepages are screenshotted right on the ranking so you can look for yourself.
• Nothing is fabricated. No fake testimonials, no invented user counts, no seeded comments. If that ever changes, the corrections address below is the place to say so.
